Animal Classification
This activity requires
lots of preliminary projects about animals in order to work.
Objectives
Children will be able to classify animals by animal group such
as fish, bird, reptile, mammal, and amphibian
Children ages 2 ½-3 can group by one attribute Cog. IIIA
and ages 2-3 can name the animals Lang. IA
Materials
Large signs with words
(BIRD, FISH, MAMMAL, REPTILE, AMPHIBIAN); animal flashcards with pictures of
different animals.
Procedures
1. Have children sit in a large semi-circle facing an oblong
table with the signs taped on the wall above the table.
2. Talk about why animals are different and what animals go in certain groups.
Talk generally and ask questions.
3. Begin by holding up one flash card at a time and have the children name the
animal, talk about its qualities and try to put it into the correct group.
4. Have children come up and take turns putting the flash card under the
correct sign. Help younger children by having them name the animal and
directing them to the right sign. |
