Where the Wild Things Are, Part IV: The Play Itself!
Very nice to see the
children act out a play.
Objectives
Children ages 4 and up can act out the story and/or demonstrate
meaning of words by pantomime Lang. IIIB
and children ages 2-3 can demonstrate simple action words Lang. IIIB
All of the children can learn cooperative play that is goal-directed toward a
dramatization SE IV
and on-looker behavior: child watches play and join in for a few minutes. SE VI
Materials
The children make
masks; jungle scenery; boat (3-4 chairs in a line); bowl; dress-up clothes for
Max's mother; Max's bed.
Procedures
1. Gather children in a circle on the floor. Establish lay-out
of stage: Max's room, boats and ocean, jungle home of wild things; audience
seating.
2. Children select their roles and are directed to the proper place on stage.
If necessary, teacher can assume role in order to complete the casting.
3. Introduce the play and players with applause and much fanfare. Action begins
as teacher narrates story. Teacher prompts players, establishing flow of the
play.
4. At end of the play, again much applause and fanfare. Praise each child for
his/her contribution.
5. Do the dramatization again allowing kids to switch roles.
