Materials

Charts with numerals 1-5 on left-hand side, divided by horizontal lines (one chart per child); colored shapes cut out of paper; paste.

Procedures

1. Put shapes (in containers) and paste in the center of the table. Give each child a chart and ask him to identify the numerals.

2. Have children count out the corresponding number of shapes for each numeral and paste them on the chart. For younger children, put dots on the chart where the shapes are to be pasted. Ask kids to identify the shapes and colors while they are pasting.

Variations

1. Extend the chart to 10.

2. Instead of shapes, use leaves, buttons, macaroni, or other materials.

3. Leave the numeral column blank.  Let children paste on shapes, count them, and fill in the numeral by writing or tracing.

4. Make charts into recipes for imaginary sundaes.  Provide shapes to represent scoops of ice cream, cherries, nuts, whipped cream, etc.  Children can have any proportion they choose.  (Ice cream should, of course, come in a variety of flavors.)
