Procedures
1. Have children sit in a circle on the floor. Tell children
that you are going to measure their waists to see how big they are. Have children
point to their waists. Have them twist at the waist, bend forward and
backwards, sideways. What does the waist help them do?
2. Ask for ideas about how to measure waists. Could you use a yardstick? A
ruler?
3. Each child comes in turn to be measured. Put the ribbon around his/her waist
and cut to size. Put the child’s name on the ribbon and give it to him/her.
4. After each child has been measured, have children compare ribbons to
determine the longest and shortest. Put the name of the child with the longest
ribbon at the top of the chart and have him/her glue the ribbon next to the
name. Have child with shortest ribbon glue it on bottom of chart with name.
Repeat comparisons to find longest and shortest remaining ribbons. Compare to
chart and glue in appropriate places.
5. Put chart on bulletin board for discussion.
