Materials

Bisquick mix in bowl with a 1/4 cup measure; cold water in shallow pan with a tablespoon; flour in small bowl; brown sugar in bowl with tablespoon; raisins in bowl with a teaspoon; cinnamon in spice shaker; small bowl and fork for each child; baking sheet(s) pancake turner(s). See attached wall chart and recipe for procedure.

Procedures

1. Gather children around a table. Explain briefly what they will be making and discuss the ingredients to be used (wet, dry, sweet, and smelly).

2. Have two children go around table, stopping at teach child to pass out a bowl and fork and help measure 1/4 cup of Bisquick from bowl.

3. Proceed through recipe as a group, directing the children's attention to wall chart and adapting the procedures to your group. Older children can "read" the pictures aloud and demonstrate the process for the group. For example, dividing dough balls into halves and patting them out flat. Younger children may name the actions in the pictures.

4. Frequently, as soon as they are finished, children want to do the process all over again. Let them! They will probably be able to work more independently and refer more to the chard, consolidate new concepts, and/or help newcomers go through the steps.

RECIPE (Individual quantities—enough to make one for you and a friend)

Mix in bowl with a fork till doughy:

1. Divide dough into 2 balls, sprinkle flour on table and pat or roll each ball flat with hands.

2. Mix 1 tablespoon brown sugar and ½ tablespoon of ground cinnamon in bowl. Sprinkle some of this mixture onto each ball—all over.

3. Add 1 teaspoon raisins to each patty and carefully fold in half. Seal edges of folded dough to keep goodies inside (A tiny bit of water helps glue the edges together).

4. Place on baking sheet and bake in oven at 375 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown.

5. Eat plain or with butter.
