measuring cups; recipe written in symbols on big piece of paper (See Fig. 1); a
paper "tasting" cup for each child. (See Fig. 2 for proportions in
judging "a little" and "a lot."
Procedures
1. Seat children around table. Give each child
a shaker jar and spoon to make "milkshakes". Call their attention to
written recipe and go over steps. Have them twist caps off shakers.
2. Pass around bowl of powdered milk, each taking "a lot" with spoon.
Pass pitchers of water and have them add "a little" to the milk,
twist cap on and shake. Next pass around chocolate, each spooning in "a
little" and stirring. Have them taste liquid by pouring a little into
their tasting cups. How does it taste? (Bitter.) Ask what it needs to make it
sweet. Pass sugar around, each spooning in "a little" to taste. Shake
and taste again. Now how does it taste? (Sweet.) Add more sugar and chocolate
to suit individual tastes.
3. Review in sequence steps take to make the shakes. Then have a party!
