Growing Without Dirt

You're not a kid without a little dirt, but this lesson focuses on the wonder of water and sunlight.

Objectives

Children participating will be able to understand responses to an unusual problem.

Materials

Shallow dishes or small shallow containers, carrot tops (green ones),
cotton, lima beans, sweet potatoes

Procedures

1. At a table have each child cut two carrot tops off. Have each pour a small amount of water into their containers and place the carrot tops in the water.

2. Have each put their cotton on the top of a full small cup of water and place the dry lima beans on top.

3. Let each child place a sweet potato large side down into a larger container of water.

4. Place all containers in a sunny window. They have just started their own garden.
