tasting to go on.

Children between the ages of 4-5 years can describe the objects
using three descriptors: color, shape, size Lang. IIIA
and they can cut with a knife SH I
Children between the ages of 3-4 years are able to identify objects as “longer
than” or “shorter than” Lang. IIIB
and they can also spread peanut butter with a knife SH I
Materials
Head of celery; peanut
butter or cream cheese or both in shallow containers; sturdy plastic knives or
non-sharp metal dinner knives; water; towels.
Procedures
1. Seat children around table. Show them a head of celery and
explain how it grows. Pass it around and have each child pull of a stalk, wash
it, and dry it.
2. Choose a child to pass out knives. Tell children to cut stalks into pieces.
(You could pass out different lengths of sticks and instruct children to cut
celery pieces as long as their sticks.) Discuss how many pieces each stalk
yielded. Let children cut off and taste small pieces of celery. Discuss taste,
sound chewing makes, (close eyes and listen), strings in celery, etc.
3. Have children spread peanut butter and/or cream cheese into hollows of
celery pieces. Talk about where peanut butter or cream cheese come from. (If
using both, compare the smells, tastes by closing eyes and trying to tell which
is which.)
4. Put out a tray for finished boats. Serve for group snack.
